Oslo, August 22nd, 2003: Sending picture messages on a mobile phone (MMS) will be free of charge for Telenor Mobil's customers in September and October too. The MMS use has undergone an explosive growth during the summer and Telenor Mobil want more of their customers to be able to try out the service for some time free of charge.

The use of MMS has been free since June 1st. This meant that the number of messages sent increased from 160 000 in May to 550 000 in June. In July, this increased to a formidable 1.35 million messages, and the August development promises increased growth.

At the same time the increase in the number of messages has led to some technical instability for the service. Because of the extension of the free period this time will also be used to assure the quality of the technical platform.

"We are very pleased with the increased use of MMS which is linked to the fact that more and more people purchase phones with the possibility of sending and receiving picture messages. We know that even more people will get MMS compatible phones in late summer and we therefore wish to prolong the free period so that more people can familiarise themselves with this service free of charge", says CEO of Telenor Mobil, Ingvild Myhre.

"Telenor Mobil's customers have once again shown that they are the quickest in the world to start using new technology and new services. In the same way that our customers embraced SMS, the MMS usage is bigger than in any other European country", says Ingvild Myhre.

The "MMS for free" scheme encompasses the actual sending of MMS of the size of maximum 100 kb from one personal mobile phone to another. Content suppliers determine the cost of buying pictures from them.
