We have gone from providing telegraphs, switchboards and phone booths to developing the innovative technologies that empower today’s societies. It’s a long way from where we started in 1855.
Here are key events in Telenor’s history of providing services to international customers.
Telenor has provided telecommunications in Norway for more than 165 years, starting with the telegraph, continuing with telephones and broadcasting networks, and continuing to today’s digital innovations.
Norway started early to build a telegraphy network: Den Norske Statstelegraf (Norwegian Telegraph Administration, now Telenor) was founded in 1855.
The first Norwegian telephones were sold in the capital, Christiania (Oslo), in 1878.
Norway established so-called land-based mobile services from the late 1950s, at the same time as many other countries.
