At the Digital Winners Award dinner late Thursday night, WeWantToKnow was announced as this year’s recipient of the Telenor Digital Winners Award. The French-Norwegian start-up aims to deliver the next generation of learning games, and was awarded the prize in competition with a record number of 95 applicants from Norway, Sweden and Denmark.
“We had a tremendous number of high quality applicants this year, including an exceptionally large amount in the education and children space.  However, WeWantToKnow, clearly stood out. Not only does their digital technology make complex algebra concepts accessible and engaging, their DragonBox product is actually changing the way that students learn and teachers teach,” said Rolv-Erik Spilling, EVP and Head of Telenor Digital, and chairman of the 2013 Digital Winners jury.

The Jury’s statement about this year’s winner

In its statement, the Digital Winner award jury says: “Being able to see a six-year-old solve equations that stumped a 60 year old, was incredible. We see a clear potential for Telenor to help accelerate WeWantToKnow’s growth.  Mathematics is a universal language, and we think that with the right partnership, DragonBox has the potential of being just as successful in Bangladesh or Bulgaria as it has been in Norway and the United States. In the context of Telenor’s Internet for All strategy, it’s hard to imagine a greater purpose for Internet use than parents investing in their children’s education.”

“This is great news.  DragonBox has been winning awards all over the world - but it feels great to also win in our home market.  The biggest awards we are getting - are the emails we keep getting every day from kids, parents and teachers who experience that DragonBox really has a positive impact on their lives", says Jean-Baptiste Huynh, co-founder and CEO of WeWantToKnow.

Record level of Award entries

Earlier this week Telenor presented a shortlist of three candidates out of the 95 applicants. In addition to the winner, the shortlist included 23 from Denmark and Relink from Norway. 23 builds visual sharing tools for personal and organizational use, while Relink offers its users a more time effective and less resource demanding recruitment process.

“I have to say that apart from the fact that the quality of applicants this year has been very high, I’m especially satisfied with the amount of candidates from Sweden and Denmark. Seeing a Norwegian dominance the last couple of years, and being a Nordic prize, it’s gratifying to see that the innovative spirit in all of Scandinavia is strong, and growing. The candidates that entered the competition this year without reaching the final stage should not be surprised if we also get in touch with them to discuss possible partnerships in the coming months,” said Spilling.

As a part of the Digital Winners Award, WeWantToKnow will receive NOK 200 000 and the opportunity to further develop their business in cooperation with Telenor Digital.
