Telenor to upgrade its Online ADSL offering: higher speeds, lower rates and a new Mini subscription

"We will at all times ensure that we are attuned to our customers' consumption patterns. At the same time that more people are demanding higher broadband speeds, we are also seeing that some are holding out for lower rates before acquiring broadband. Through the introduction of the Mini subscription, and higher speeds on our current ADSL products, I feel that we are now meeting the demand from customers," says Knut Haakon Nilsen, Head of Internet at Telenor. "Both Mini and Ekstra are competitive options in a broadband market characterised by a large number of suppliers and fierce competition," continues Nilsen.

We are seeing an increase in Internet use among Telenor's existing customers. We are registering more traffic per customer through our network, and we are also seeing that the bulk of our customers now require higher bandwidth, to be able receive and send large quantities of data. This includes images, video, music or large files that are sent from users' homes to their workplaces, and vice versa. Telenor have chosen to meet this development by upgrading our ADSL products to adapt to our customers' needs. A monthly rate reduction of NOK 50 per month will be introduced for the Online ADSL Ekstra subscription (6000/500 kbps), making the new subscription rate NOK 499 per month.

All existing customers will automatically receive the upgraded speeds within 15 March 2006. The process of migrating all customers on to the new speeds will start immediately, and will continue until 15 March next year. The process will require some installation work in the access networks close to the customer end, as well as in the central networks where the increased traffic volumes are managed. We regret that we are not able to offer all users immediate access to the higher speeds. Unfortunately, there will also be some users who are unable to fully upgrade their speeds, due to technical limitations. This includes customers whose local lines are already close to their maximum capacity. These customers will receive separate notification.
