Telenor will be one of the first Inmarsat operators and service providers to launch Inmarsats new Global Area Network (GAN) for mobile multimedia applications, offering the service from the third quarter of 1999. GAN is the worlds first global communications switched system for mobile multimedia applications.
According to Monica Fossnes, marketing manager for personal communication services in Telenor Satellite, GAN will substantially improve the data transfer capabilities and the mobility of remote communication. "A GAN user will be able to access up to 64 kbps data capacity from a laptop-size multimedia terminal," says Fossnes. "This speed is comparable to a fixed ISDN line."

Fossnes says the new service will prove particularly valuable to mobile satellite phone users such as journalists, photographers, engineers and aid workers. Such users generally require access to e-mail, web-based applications such as a corporate intranet, as well as the ability to transfer large data files like geological data and photographic images.

"We feel that the Global Area Network will strengthen Telenors position as a complete supplier of Inmarsat satellite services and differentiate our mobile offering from providers of voice-based services such as Iridium, Globalstar and ICO," says Fossnes.
