Telenor opens The Home of the Future

Telenor is opening the Home of the Future at Fornebu on Friday October 26. The Home of the Future is Telenor's multidisciplinary research laboratory, which will also be an important showcase for future innovations in the Group. At the opening, the researchers will show specific user scenarios and demonstrate possible new applications of the future.
Telenor's House of the Future is located next to the Group's new, large head office at Fornebu, which will receive its first new occupants in a month's time. The Home of the Future has an advanced infrastructure, with cabling, wireless systems, audio-visual equipment and control systems, but goes further than what is known today as the "smart house". Experiments for enabling the research and demonstration of practical applications of new technology will take place here. First and foremost the house will be a flexible laboratory for the development of future ICT solutions for the family and the home.
Telenor's Home of the Future will be used for brainstorming sessions, scenario building, prototype developing and demonstration purposes. These will be realised in a joint venture with the Norwegian State Housing Bank (Husbanken), with flexible space solutions where the work will centred around user needs.
The contributors will primarily be from the research environment in Telenor, but also from the other parts of the Group as well as external partners. In the first phase, Norwegian State Housing Bank, Bang&Olufsen and Intelli will be involved. The latter is a leader in the Nordic countries of systems and useful services for intelligent buildings and homes. The work of the projects will focus on new services and applications, as well as technological solutions.
"The Home of the Future provides Telenor with a unique opportunity to test and demonstrate services and applications early in the research stage and in natural surroundings. We shall focus on the family and the home - and the house as a place for work, learning, communication and entertainment. It is important to see the overall perspective of this. We will therefore also invite joint venture partners from different industries," said Berit Svendsen, Group Director for technology in Telenor and manager of the Group's R&D activity.
Working towards future perspectives, the researchers are making use of prognoses and trend studies, and developing their own scenarios. These function as tools for both creative thinking and for sharing ideas with others. Experiences drawn from the pilot project "Kitchen of the Future" in Telenor R&D at Kjeller, have shown that this is helpful. Dialogue with the users is also a working method that can provide positive contributions to the development process, and contribute to making product ideas more concrete.
At the opening of the Home of the Future, Telenor R&D will show wireless applications in the home, such as an electronic key and identification system, the universal remote control, as well as a new participatory co-existence from the youth's bedroom. The researchers will also demonstrate new sensor technology, known as biofeedback, in a project where bodily reactions control certain functions in the house.
