Telenor Mobile Communications bids for GSM 1800 licence in Turkey

Norwegian Telenor Mobile Communications is part of a consortium bidding for a GSM 1800 licence in Turkey. Telenor has an interest of 36 percent in the consortium. Three licences have been offered for auction, one of which has been reserved for the state-owned telecommunications company, Turk Telecom. Minimum investment per licence is USD 649 million.
There are at present three mobile operators in Turkey: Turk Telecom, Turkcell and Telsim. The networks in operation comprise of one NMT 450 and two GSM 900 networks. Mobile penetration in Turkey is experiencing a strong growth and has increased from one percent in 1995 to 13 percent by the end of 1999. The number of mobile subscribers increased from 3.5 million to 8.4 million in 1999.
Turkey has the second highest population in Europe with a total of 65.5 million inhabitants. The average age is 27 years, compared to 42 years in Western Europe. Approximately 70 percent of the population live in urban areas.
