Telenor Mobil AS and Eterra ASA have entered into a framework agreement for supplying wireless Internet zones, also called WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network). Under the agreement Eterra will engineer the technical system integration. The aim of the agreement is to assure that users wishing to transmit data across the wireless Internet via WLAN can move freely over to Telenor Mobil's regular GSM/GPRS network without losing the Internet connection.
This agreement demonstrates a new step towards a wireless existence for Internet users. WLAN is a wireless local high-speed network with a relatively limited coverage span. It is expected that such zones, both in private and public office buildings, hotels and conference centres, highly crowded areas, sports arenas, shopping centres and other public areas will rapidly gain ground from now on. The solutions now available will allow users of WLAN for Internet connection to combine this with Telenor Mobil's regular network. The technology deployed for this is based on solutions supplied by Hewlett Packard, Cisco Systems and Birdstep Tec.

Users are assured that the security factor will be upheld at the utmost level. The data transmission speed will be faster in a WLAN zone than in the regular mobile network. The solution paves the way for seamless transition between WLAN zones and GSM, and is also adjusted for the phasing in of the third generation mobile network, UMTS, which is currently being rolled out. In the future transition between WLAN and the regular mobile network will be completely seamless. This will further simplify deployment of data solutions from Telenor Mobil.

The market is estimated to be valued at several hundred million Norwegian kroner in the course of the coming three to five years. The framework agreement between Telenor Mobil and Eterra has an estimated value of several tens of thousand Norwegian kroner for the first 12 months of the contract period.

"We see this as a strategic agreement for Telenor Mobil. The development of high quality, high speed and secure solutions for data traffic via wireless networks is essential in Telenor Mobil's plight to continue to offer customers the very best in mobile communication. The Norwegian and Nordic market is increasingly demanding solutions for data traffic via the mobile network in addition to regular speech communication. This is something we will be able to offer through our cooperation with Eterra by way of the unique connection between WLAN and our existing GSM network," said Telenor Mobile's Managing Director, Ingvild Myhre.

"We are happy that Telenor Mobil has selected Eterra as its supplier and system integrator for the WLAN zones. I feel confident that we will, through this cooperation, be able to offer mobile solutions that will change the daily life of many Internet users. Telenor Mobile's network is of a very high quality, and through a combination of our competence within system development and Telenor Mobil's experience and competence within mobile telephony, we will be able to offer our joint customers excellent results in the form of efficiency," said Eterra CEO Sverre Bjerkeli.
