: On Monday Telenor launched IP telephony for larger businesses and for public administrative offices with internal data networks. In supplying the dialling tone over IP, Telenor has prepared the ground for future communications solutions, allowing businesses to decide the tempo for when they want to take up the new solutions.

"IP telephony from Telenor secures high quality and safety for businesses that make the transfer to new and integrated telecommunications and data solutions. Our solution ensures high-quality voice, both through the internal network and vis-Ø -vis the public telephony network. As the leading supplier of comprehensive telecommunications services in the Norwegian business market, we believe it is important that IP telephony is firmly integrated with our other solutions. The IP telephony solution that we introduce today will ensure full access to Telenor's other telephony services, such as switchboard, customer services and call conference services," said Anders Hauglie-Hanssen, executive vice president of Telenor's Division Business Market.

IP telephony is telephony transmitted through the data networks. Telephony services can therefore be integrated with such data applications as e-mail and messaging services, or joint catalogue services, depending on the recipient's availability. IP telephony also allows users to set up call conferences that can process both voice and video and distribute information by means of documents and presentations.

IP telephony can also be integrated more closely with businesses' customer services systems. Customers can be prioritised in the phone queue, it will be easy to administer and direct calls from prioritised customers to the right addresses, and a number of statistics functions will also be available. IP telephony will also ensure geographical mobility, since all telephony services will be available wherever users have access to their business' data network. Users are thus able to operate customer services centres or switchboards from home offices or anywhere else that they may be working.

All the services can be produced anywhere in the data network, and the flexibility that this creates will bring savings with respect to both investment and management. Telenor's solution enables customers to gradually transfer their business telephony over to IP, while also providing access to joint telephony services for all employees, including those on ISDN. This will ensure optimal cost control and contribute to reduce risks.

The IP telephony solution from Telenor Division Business Market covers a number of aspects. The phone numbers and the internal number plans that the business already has can be retained when the business makes the transfer to IP telephony. The solution also provides backup solutions in the form of fixed telephony or mobile in the event that an error in the data network should affect all the phone numbers in the business.

Telenor's IP telephony solution for business networks was developed in collaboration with Alcatel Norway AS. For those who would like to learn more, information is available on: http://www.telenor.no/bedrift/produkter/telefoni/telefonilosninger/ip_telefoni/ip_telefoni.html
