On October 1, Telenor will introduce two alternative ways in which to charge for the use of the Wireless Internet Zone (WLAN) service. One of these price models involves the customer paying according to the volume of data transmitted. The other method of payment is adapted to be used with WLAN cards that may be leased at hotels and conference establishments and allows for unlimited usage within a limited period of time.
Since February 2001, Telenor Mobil has offered mobile broadband access via WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) to a number of locations in Norway. The service has been termed the Wireless Internet Zone. With the help of a WLAN card in a portable PC, it will be possible to work without having to depend on a fixed network connection. The transmission speed may be up to 11Mb/s.

The Wireless Internet Zone is presently available in 19 locations in Norway - most of which involve hotels and conference establishments. Telenor Mobil aims to cover 50 zones by the end of 2001.

As an introductory offer, the service has so far been free of charge for Telenor Mobil's Nomad customers, but from October 1., the following methods of payment will be adopted:

Price alternative 1: Charge by volume
With this solution, all Telenor Mobil's Nomad customers can use their current login code and password. The customer will pay for the amount of bytes transmitted during the period of one month starting on the 1st of every month. The price per byte will be gradually reduced. For the first Megabyte, the price will be NOK 0,10/kB. Thereafter, and up to 20 MB, the price will be NOK 0,025/kB. For all usage after 20MB, the price will be NOK 0,02/kB. The use of the Wireless Internet Zone is seen in connection with GPRS (General Package Radio Service) and the price you pay is calculated according to the consolidated use of GPRS and the Wireless Internet Zone. There is no subscription fee tied to the use of the Wireless Internet Zone, which is why the price is higher for the first MB transmitted.

Price alternative 2: 24-hour subscription
At hotels that offer access to Telenor Mobil's Wireless Internet Zone, it will be possible to lease a WLAN card with accompanying login code and password. This will last for 24 hours, and the price will include unlimited usage within a limited period of time.
