On Thursday, Telenor presented Det Norske Veritas' report on working and production conditions at Grameenphone's suppliers in Bangladesh. The report highlights several issues that are not in line with the terms and conditions of the contracts, the Working Environment Act in Bangladesh, or with Telenor's Codes of Conducts.

Based on this, Telenor is presenting a list of initiatives to rectify the matters uncovered as soon as possible.

Sets up a new unit in Telenor
"I have decided to set up a unit at group level that will secure the implementation and follow-up of HSE work at suppliers to Telenor's operational companies," says Jon Fredrik Baksaas, President and CEO of Telenor. "In addition, a project has been set up that will review and record health, safety and environmental (HSE) matters at the Group's companies and suppliers. This includes formal procedures and follow-up, as well as identification and implementation of the necessary changes.

Extended cooperation with Veritas
Another important factor in this work is to strengthen managers' and employees' focus and awareness of HSE issues throughout the group. In addition, Telenor is extending its cooperation with Det Norske Veritas as an advisor to perform further reviews in Bangladesh and other markets where Telenor has operations.

"This report is showing us the right path to important improvement work that lies ahead. We will immediately speed up the process of improving the defects underlined in the report," says Jon Fredrik Baksaas.
