Telenor and Egmont have signed a strategic agreement to cooperate on the development of mobile multimedia services based on UMTS technology. The first services will be ready this year.
The companies will produce multimedia services that combine sound, pictures, graphics and animation in a new way. In the future it will also be possible to transmit live motion pictures direct between mobile phones.

Telenor's contribution to the alliance consists of technological knowledge and skill about the UMTS-technology, while Egmont will supply the storytelling expertise. Egmont has gathered staff for the project from Norwegian companies such as Egmont Serieforlaget (cartoon publisher), Nordisk Film and Danish Egmont , a company that produces cartoon strips, animation, TV entertainment and computer games on an international scale.

Content is the essence
"We believe that the mobile phone will become an important entertainment channel in the near future. This agreement is vital in the quest to secure quality content. Egmont is one of Europe's biggest players in the entertainment business, and has proved particularly attractive within the youth segment. Young people are among the most active mobile Internet users today, and are also the most important target group for the new services we are looking at," says Knut Erik Walter, Telenor Mobil's UMTS Director.

Great enthusiasm for new possibilities
"The common denominator for Egmont's 100 different companies is the practice of storytelling mediated through a variety of printed and electronic media. This cooperation with Telenor allows us to take an exciting step into the future, and in our companies, there is great enthusiasm to try out the new possibilities," says Henrik Kristensen. Kristensen is the Director for Egmont New Media, responsible for coordinating content development for new digital platforms.
