Talks between Norwegian Telenor and Swedish Telia on a possible merger between the two companies have ended resultless. The owners of the two companies, the Norwegian and the Swedish governments, did not succeed in reaching an agreement on equal balance between the two parties in a new merged company. The decision made by the Minister of Transport and Communication is in full harmony with the advice given by the board and management of Telenor.
The management and board of Telenor still think considerable gain could have been attained by merging the two companies. Merger plans have since the start been based on the assumption that a Swedish-Norwegian company should present itself as an independent, reliable company founded on balance and equal weight. As this proved unattainable, it was only natural to end the talks. The board and management of Telenor regret that it has not been possible to reach a full understanding on both sides as to what balance and equal weight would imply.

Telenors main goal during the merger talks were twofold secure better and lower priced services to Norwegian customers through reduced costs, and participate in a unity with the strength and competence to establish itself as an important actor in the global telecomms and IT industry. These goals stand firm even though Telenor must look for other alternatives to realise such ambitions to the best of the Norwegian society.

Through intensive and systematic development of technology and services, Telenor has successfully built one of the worlds most modern telecommunications networks, and at the same time been able to offer Norwegian customers some of the lowest prices in Europe. This gives Telenor a very good starting point to meet the increased competition in the home market.

Internationally Telenor intends to develop further the alliances and joint ventures already established, and to seek solutions which in the long run will benifit both national and international businesses.
