Successful launch of Telenors new satellite

Telenors new communications satellite Thor III successfully blasted into orbit on a Delta II rocket from Cape Canaveral 20.35 Tuesday (02.35 Wednesday Norwegian/European time). With this launch, Telenor has strengthen its position "One Degree West" with a further 14 transponders. Thor III is the second communications satellite designed and developed for Telenor and it will cover the Nordic and Central European market.
"We are extremely relieved about this successful launch," says Telenor Satellite Services CEO Knut Reed and adds, "we await to begin operating Thor III after a test period of about one month."

Telenor has invested about NOK 1 billion in Thor III. The satellite will be operated from Telenor´s new controll center in Oslo. Thor III is developed by Hughes Space and Communications Company, and was launched Tuesday 09.06.98 at 20.35 (Wednesday 10.06.98 02.35 Norwegian time) from Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA

"With Thor III in orbit, we've strengthened our position at One Degree West as the third largest satellite broadcaster in Europe," says Telenor International CEO Arve Johansen.

"Our Thor satellite system takes us right into the future of digital transmission, and with our other satellite services such as VSAT and maritime and satellite based mobile services, we may justly name ourselves the most complete satellite operator in Europe," Johansen says.

"Our ambitions are to double our satellite operations and income over the next three years, and to offer our customers considerably increased capacity and many new interactive services," Arve Johansen concludes.
