From today on, Norwegians can find out where the nearest chemist's, coffee shop or cash dispenser is located, simply by sending a text message from their mobile phones. The first service on offer is supplied by Pocket IT and is available for everyone using Telenor's mobile network.
From now on, Telenor will give others the opportunity to supply text messaging services (SMS) based on positioning in Telenor Mobil's network. This means that positioning data from Telenor Mobil's network will be combined with map data from for example Pocket IT in order to reveal to the user where he/she is and where, for example, to locate the nearest coffee shop. In urban areas, the accuracy of the positioning constitutes just a few hundred meters.

Since the autumn of 1999, Telenor Mobil has been laying the foundations that allow other parties to supply services via the mobile network and gain revenue from this. The turnover in this market has increased immensely, and new services are constantly appearing.

"The development has revealed that this was the right way to go. Norway is one of the world's leading nations when it comes to developing mobile services. This is not least due to the cooperation between mobile operators and service providers, says director of the External Service Market Department in Telenor Mobil, Lars Christian Iuel.

Before the new location based services may be activated, the message; POST START must be sent to 1999. By doing this, the customer confirms that he/she allows Telenor Mobil to disclose information on the user's location to the content partner. It is only when the user sends a text message asking for a location based service that the content provider can locate the position of the user.
