Multimedia messages at NOK 5 apiece

Instead of charging according to the volume of data, Telenor Mobil chose to adopt a set price for multimedia messaging when the company launched its pricing scheme in March this year. The purpose of this was to make the pricing simple and clear for customers. Most European mobile operators have landed on a similar pricing scheme. This will also make it easier to send and receive multimedia messages across the different networks both in Norway and abroad.

The Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) is heir to the text message. Among other features, this standard allows users to send pictures taken with mobile phones equipped with built-in cameras. MMS is a common standard which will be supported by most handset producers. A multimedia message may include text, images and sound in all combinations. This means that the volume of data will vary greatly. By adopting a set price of NOK 5 per message sent, users will know exactly how much they are paying, regardless of volume.

The price of NOK 5 applies to messages within a volume limit that can feasibly be sent and received via all mobile handsets currently available. Receiving messages is free of charge.Telenor Mobil reserves the right to adjust this pricing scheme if mobile handset producers in the future offer phones allowing for considerably larger volumes of data transmission than that which is possible via the phones currently available.

Easy as ever
"Text messaging is a huge success in Norway. One reason for this is the simple pricing scheme which gives customers a clear picture of how they pay for the service. We therefore decided to adopt the same principle for multimedia messaging. The general market price for MMS has now settled at a lower rate than the NOK 10 originally set by Telenor Mobil when the service was launched. This is why we are now halving the price," said Assistant Head of Information Esben Tuman Johnsen, Telenor Mobil.

MMS set-up:

In order to use MMS, customers must install a specific MMS set-up. This can be acquired by sending a text message to 1999. The set-up will then automatically be installed.
