The EU Commission Tuesday decided to expand its analysis of the proposed merger between Telenor and Telia. The study now enters what is called phase 2, a phase which may last up to four months.
Tormod Hermansen, the future CEO of the merged Telenor/Telia states:

- It is of course disappointing that the Commission has decided to extend its analysis of the merger between Telenor and Telia, but we have been aware all along that major mergers may be subjected to a phase 2 study. This is certainly a major merger, and the first of its kind within the EU.

- Telenor and Telia are entering phase 2 of the study with great optimism. We are convinced that the Commission will see what advantages the merger between Telenor and Telia bring the consumers. A merger will not limit competition. On the contrary, it will open up for new actors to enter the Nordic market, and also contribute to increased competition in other parts of Europe. Consumers throughout Europe will benefit from the development of a new, innovative and competitive telecommunications company.
