DiGi is committed to saving the earth, and they are living up to that promise by making environmentalism a part of the daily routine.

Turn off the lights, make a difference

For the past year, DiGi has been turning off the lights every day. It is now company policy to shut down 70 per cent of company lighting during the lunch hours, serving as a very visual reminder of DiGi's environmental commitment. DiGi firmly believes that consistency and sustainability are the keys to making any initiative a success, and they have applied these principles to their daily lights out effort.

Long-term climate commitment

"DiGi's lights out campaign is a reminder of the climate promise we made when we launched the "Deep Green" initiative in 2008," said Philip Ling, Corporate Responsibility for DiGi. "Our green commitment is not just a one-time thing; it is something that we will continue to practice each and every day."

How it all began

As a part of its Deep Green initiative, DiGi participated in Earth Hour 2009, a campaign for energy efficiency and climate change awareness organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Malaysia. DiGi offices and outlets across Malaysia went black, eliminating all non-essential lighting for one hour. Employees were so moved by the environmental impact of such a simple effort, that they voted to turn off the lights every day.

Earth Hour is a worldwide effort

DiGi is not alone in its continued support of Earth Hour. In March 2010, hundreds of millions of people took part in the fourth annual Earth Hour. More than 4,000 cities in 126 countries officially switched off the lights to pledge their support for the planet, making Earth Hour 2010 the world's largest global climate change initiative.

Everyone can live low-carbon

"Earth Hour is a global symbolic event focusing on climate change and how we all can contribute to a low-carbon lifestyle, just like DiGi is doing every day. Telenor Group has a strong ambitions to reduce the CO2 emission intensity of our global operations during the years to come - mainly by improving the energy efficiency in our networks, buildings and IT systems and deployment of renewable energy sources," said Jan Kristensen, Head of Telenor Group Climate Initiative.

"Our industry also has a strong obligation to develop and deliver ICT-solutions enabling our customers to reduce their CO2 emissions and use of energy," said Kristensen.

DiGi drives Deep Green forward

DiGi's practice of Earth Hour each and every day is a part of its Deep Green programme. Deep Green was started in 2008, as an effort to address the effects of climate change. The overall aim is to reduce CO2 emissions by nearly 50 per cent over a period of three to four years. DiGi has engaged in numerous activities revolving around the Deep Green program, designed to raise awareness about climate change both inside and outside the organization.

DiGi has also initiated a community engagement programme called Deep Green NOW (Nurturing Our World). Deep Green NOW was organized to bring awareness and understanding of climate change and the local environmental issues to communities across Malaysia.

DiGi is the Telenor's mobile operator in Malaysia.
