Telenor Norway has today been allocated new 3G and 4G frequencies. By purchasing new frequencies Telenor will be able to offer even better 4G coverage to Norwegian customers as soon as early 2014.
“This is a big day for Telenor and especially our customers. Coverage will improve as of early 2014. We are now ready to improve coverage in every county nationwide - not to mention that indoor coverage will be significantly better,” says Berit Svendsen, CEO of Telenor Norway.

“Telenor customers shall be assured that Telenor also in the future will provide the best coverage and high capacity mobile data in Norway,” says Berit Svendsen.

In new areas Telenor will apply both 800 and 1800 megahertz frequencies to build 4G, and possibly supplement with 2600 MHz for further capacity expansions. This will ensure both the best coverage and high capacity. The base stations that are already provisioned to use the 800 MHz band will be activated in the first quarter of 2014.

Leader in coverage

“Telenor's ambition is to deliver the best mobile experience nationwide by having the best coverage by far. During 2013 we have upgraded over 2.000 base stations with 3G and 4G. New frequencies provide us with the opportunity to develop mobile broadband with even better spatial and indoor coverage,” says Berit Svendsen.

From analogue TV to streaming TV

Telenor has enabled over 1000 base stations that in a few weeks into the new year will be able to start using the new 4G frequencies. The exact date has not yet been determined, as the operators of the three blocks in the 800 megahertz band have to coordinate commissioning in order to avoid, among other things, interference problems.

“The so-called 800 frequencies were used to provide analogue TV signals to Norwegian homes. In 2014 they will be used to provide Telenor customers with high speed mobile broadband, and to ensure great experiences when, among other things, streaming video and music. Over 50 per cent of Norway's population already has 4G coverage from Telenor. Many places that already have 4G coverage will also see an improvement when the 800 frequency is brought into use. The 800 frequency offers many times more 4G coverage and much better indoor coverage for households and businesses,” says Bjørn Amundsen, Vice President and Head of Coverage at Telenor Norway.

The Norwegian Post and Telecommunications Authority (PT) announced today that Telenor has been successful in securing the following resources in the spectrum auction that was held on 2nd December: 2*10 MHz in 800 MHz-band, 2*5 MHz in 900 MHz-band and 2*10 MHz in 1800 MHz-band. After recent allocation Telenor is in possession of the following mobile frequencies: 800 MHz-band: 2*10, 900 MHz-band: 2*15, 1800 MHz-band: 2*20, 2100 MHz-band: 2*20, 2600MHz-band: 2*40.

On Tuesday 10th December PT will announce the total price that each operator must pay. Telenor is unable to make any comment about prices until that time.
