The Slovakian government has awarded a new contract for backbone satellite network services to Telenor Satellite in Norway. Worth in excess of NOK 230 million over a five-year period, the contract is for network services linking together public administration entities in 90 locations across Slovakia.
The new VSAT network will support various governmental applications, including the country's national register. Previously maintained by the Slovakian police, the register will now be administered by civil servants, a move which has received particularly positive acknowledgment from the EU.

"For Telenor, this contract builds further on the network services we already provide to the Slovak government," says Are Mathisen, who heads Telenor Satellite's operations in Bratislava. Mathisen says Telenor has supplied satellite network services to connect the 110 offices of Slovakia's police for the past two years.

The contract is pending formal approval from the board of Telenor International in June.
