From Local to Global Roaming in Telenor

Five years back, Telenor decided to centralize the roaming operations into a global setup to create one standardized solution. Comfone was chosen as the trusted partner for data and financial clearing as well as system support for wholesale roaming processes. Telenor has now one point of contact towards partners, which has sped up the settlement process and simplified collaboration with Telenor as a Group. Centralizing clearing house activities have been critical for working capital optimization.

Harald Krohg, CEO of Telenor Group’s Global Wholesale unit says: “Establishing trusted and long term partnerships are crucial in our ambition to drive industry simplification in the roaming area. In order to simplify the market, speed up settlement, gain more control on capital and phasing out manual processes, the migration to Comfone is one more step in the right direction for establishing global roaming processes.”

Olivier Boucaud, Executive Vice President of Sales at Comfone adds: “Establishing this strategic partnership with Telenor was a milestone in Comfone’s evolution as a full-service roaming provider. Telenor’s decision to entrust us with the consolidation and delivery of the Clearing functionalities to the entire group solidifies our position in the industry. As Telenor shapes and expands its own business, our close partnership helps Telenor realize its goals and drive the continued development of the Comfone service roadmap.”

“Telenor’s roaming journey does not end here. Global processes are the future for global services and Telenor continues to strengthen its global operation”, Krohg ends.

Telenor strengthens its wholesale roaming through partnering with RoamSmart

Telenor’s Global Wholesale unit is responsible for all aspects of wholesale roaming on behalf of Telenor Group. This includes rollout of roaming services towards the roaming partners, as well as securing inbound roaming revenue and outbound roaming cost level. Starting from January 1st 2019, Telenor’s rollout capabilities have been strengthened by entering this strategic partnership with RoamSmart.

As one of many steps taken to transform roaming rollout from a local to a global process, Telenor have implemented RoamSmart’s Roaming Management Tool to support coordination of rollout of new roaming services in the Business Units. The tool also fills the function of the centralized master database for roaming services. The newly established partnership adds another dimension to Telenor’s rollout support system as it provides access to IREG360, IOT360 and Opdata360 applications. These modules are also running on the Unified platform and are contributing to Telenor’s effective and simplified administration of dynamic wholesale roaming information throughout the lifespan of an international roaming relationship.

Magnus Svensson, Head of Roaming Solutions in Global Wholesale states: “Introducing centralized roaming rollout processes was the natural next step in executing on Global Wholesale’s efficiency and simplification agenda. This includes automation of the reception, distribution and storage of the huge number of network and billing system changes which are issued by our roaming partners. In addition, these applications are providing us with centralized control of important roaming information and also contribute to improved roaming quality for the benefit of inbound and outbound retail customers.”

Commenting on the partnership, RoamSmart’s VP Sales Mehdi Triki adds: “Telenor and RoamSmart have worked really hard over the past two years to build and deliver on the Group’s Roaming Management strategy. Our unique Unified Roaming Platform is the answer to Telenor’s strategic vision to create a centralized and holistic roaming rollout platform for all of their mobile operator markets. Our long-term engagement with Telenor is an important step for us as it allows us to provide their subsidiaries with key value-added solutions whilst continuing to extend our footprint.” Mehdi continues, “We are proud to have partnered with an innovative mobile operator like Telenor Group and look forward to embracing future joint opportunities”.

Telenor sets VoLTE roaming on European telco agenda

Telenor’s Global Wholesale unit has played a significant role in making VoLTE roaming become reality in Telenor by coordinating efforts across all company units. Telenor Norway and Denmark were chosen as pilot project in order to learn and build the necessary competence that will be used to address other Telenor units and their specific network and billing challenges. This means that upcoming Telenor affiliates can implement VoLTE roaming faster and more efficient, which also includes cost synergies.

Harald Krohg, CEO of Telenor Group’s Global Wholesale unit says “I am proud that Telenor now has taken the first steps towards establishing a new voice roaming solution. However, VoLTE roaming is not a single operator’s task. It can only be valuable if the whole industry embraces the challenge and makes the substantial efforts which are necessary to move voice roaming from 2G/3G to VoLTE. As an industry it is time to work together, enable the shutdown of the legacy networks and thereby simplify and optimize the way we work.”

For the time being Telenor has enabled VoLTE roaming only on selected handsets from Sony and Samsung. In order to speed up VoLTE roaming rollout and start looking for effective ways to enable VoLTE roaming for all customers, it is urged to onboard other handset vendors as well. “If Telenor are to succeed with this, we need both our roaming partners and handset vendors to give more attention to VoLTE roaming and contribute with their pieces of this important roaming puzzle. This is where our focus will be in the months to come. We have a solution ready for inbound as well as outbound and are now working with onboarding one affiliate at a time”, Krohg adds.

Telenor expands Global IPX footprint with Points of Presence in Miami and Ashburn

“As a mobile operator, our focus is to deliver the same level of premium voice quality to our carrier customers as we are doing with our own mobile subscribers. At the same time we are developing and growing our digital services portfolio, IPX based services in particular. For the first time Telenor offers direct access to North America, which enhances local switching capabilities and caters to Latin America; “Adding the PoPs alongside our local office in Miami is a huge step towards meeting customer demands and continue growing in the region.”

The Telenor Global IPX network is an all IP based network, built upon a carrier-grade routing platform and network links with guaranteed capacity able to provide strict Quality of Service. The market trends on exponential growth in data usage clearly show that users demand high speed data access anytime, anywhere. “High quality networks that support these connectivity requirements are critical. Mobile network operators in Europe and Asia to get greater Reach thanks to HGC Hutch-IPX and Telenor IPX interconnection

End-users to enjoy high-quality and seamless roaming

HGC and Telenor signed an IPX-peering agreement on 16 May at International Telecoms Week (ITW) 2017 in Chicago, with the aim of enabling mobile network operators (MNOs) and carriers served by the two companies to exchange IP traffic in a secure and high-quality manner.

Services will be extended to a greater population of mobile end users, who will be able to roam seamlessly across IPX platforms run by HGC and Telenor, granting extended coverage along with an enhanced voice and mobile data experience.

Furthermore, the collaboration will enable HGC and Telenor to deliver greater reach to MNOs via their IPX networks in Asia and Europe. Carriers, multinational corporations and consumer customers served by the two companies will henceforth enjoy seamless integrated service in terms of signaling and data roaming, as well as Voice-over-IPX (VoIPX) and Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) roaming, plus HD video calling and conferencing.

Andrew Kwok, President of International and Carrier Business at HTHKH, said: “European MNOs are facing a surge in traffic volume after the ‘Roam like at Home’ initiative goes live in June, when EU-based travellers will no longer have to pay roaming tariffs anywhere in the EU.”

He added: “HGC’s peering arrangement with Telenor is an enormous first stride in enabling MNOs served by us to provide service in a more cost-effective way, while making sufficient capacity available, so end users benefit from high-quality and seamless roaming. Hutch IPX also allows exchange of traffic made up of content and applications, and ensures Application-to-Person (A2P) messages reach mobile users.”

Wansit Jeremy Saiyawan, Chief Sales Officer of Telenor’s Global Wholesale unit, said: “This IPX-peering agreement builds on the strong commitment of partnership between Telenor and Hutchison Global Communications to ensure a continual evolution into the digital era. Together, we deliver end-to-end visibility on LTE services, and as such, provide the reliability that end users demand today.”
