Telenor, EEF Support Green Energy in Mykolayiv Region Voznesensk to Produce Energy from Waste
With support from Telenor, the East Europe Foundation awarded a $24,747 grant to the Agency for Economic Development of Voznesensk to introduce alternative energy sources and help protect the environment.
The grantee, the Agency of Economic Development of Voznesensk (AEDV), will introduce a system of organic waste management in Voznesensk in Mykolayiv oblast. The AEDV will help the local community separate organic waste, such as plants and trees, to use for composting and the production of fuel pellets for eventual energy conversion. The project will encompass 83% of the city’s households.
Voznesensk households produce more than 12,000 tons of organic waste annually. If garbage of different origin is not separated, it can’t be recycled or reused, so most of it is delivered to the city dump for disposal, which costs the city about UAH 400,000 (or nearly USD 89,000). These costs are covered by taxes paid by Voznesensk residents. As more and more organic and industrial (chemical) waste is stored at the city dump, the threat to Voznesensk ecology intensifies.
The AEDV’s project, supported by Telenor and EEF, will help improve the environmental situation in the city as well as save on utility bills. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the technology, a new energy-efficient boiler running on fuel pellets will be installed at a local educational institution. The energy produced by the boiler will be used to heat the building, saving UAH 40,000 - 60,000 UAH (USD 8,800 – 13,300) per year.
This grant was awarded as a part of East Europe Foundation’s Municipal Partnerships for Better Energy Use Program.
