Telenor's annual reporting 2006 Annual review 2006

Rocks and shells

Succeeding in a new industry

Telecommunications, IT and the media industry are rapidly converging. As the Internet Protocol now increasingly underpins also the transmission of speech and live pictures, this development is picking up even more speed.

In turn, this means that innovation is driven by advances in software rather than hardware. When some mobile handsets today are MP3 players with speech functionality as an add-on, it’s a software solution. When you can watch TV on your mobile and on your PC, it’s a software solution.

All this adds up to the emergence of a totally new industry – an industry where Telenor intends to play a leading role and where innovation will be key to success. We will step up our effort and closely monitor our progress, and are now initiating a project to measure innovation effectiveness. Still, we will also leave ample room for experimentation, knowing that progress requires that we sometimes fail.

On a fundamental level, all our innovation work is guided by the goals of securing efficient delivery systems, cost-efficient operation and the ability to master technology transitions. On the top level, however, only one goal is valid: To help our customers get the full benefit of communication services in their daily lives.
