Telenor grants annually a Nordic research and innovation prize in information technology and telecommunications. The motive is to underline the importance of research and innovation in the development of the information society, and to support Nordic efforts in this area.

Area
The prize may be given for work within a broad range of professional fields, which may encompass areas like technology, networks and service development, economy and markets, and user behaviour, as well as new areas that may be different from those traditionally associated with telecommunication and information technology.

For each year, however, Telenor will choose a more narrow scope for the prize, which will be announced with the invitation to propose candidates.

Recipients
The prize is granted as an honourable reward to individuals or research groups. If the prize is granted to a group, all group members must have made significant and important contributions to the work that is awarded. The recipients must either be citizens of one of the five Nordic countries or have carried out the majority of the work to be considered in companies or institutions in the Nordic region. There are no limitations with regard to age and employment.

The Prize Consists of
A diploma and NOK 250,000.

Criteria
The criteria for consideration, of which one or more may be decisive, are:

  • Relevance in relation to the chosen theme each year

  • Documented professional quality
  • Documented innovative effects, e.g. in the form of products or solutions in the market
  • The price committee's evaluation of the work's pioneering nature and its future potential
  • Publication and dissemination of results

Procedure

  1. Anyone may nominate candidates for the prize. Invitations are directed towards universities and other institutions of higher learning, research organizations and the industry in the five Nordic countries.

  2. Nominations are evaluated by the Award Committee whose choice of recipient is undisputable.

  4. The winner will be presented at a selected event during the fall. At the same event the winner shall give a lecture related to the work that has been awarded. .

Composition of the Price Committee
The price committee is chaired by a representative from Telenor. The committee shall, in addition to the chair person, consist of five members from relevant institutions outside Telenor. These are selected in such a way that they together cover a wide professional diversity, such that at least one participant represents a Nordic or European country other than Norway.
