Award winner 2002: Professor Christian S. Jensen

The Jury's grounds for selection:

Professor Christian S. Jensen of the University of Aalborg, Denmark, is the winner of Telenor's Nordic Research Award for 2002. This award was established in 1997 to reward efforts promoting the development of IT and telecommunications. The winner is awarded a diploma and NOK 250 000, which can be given to individuals or groups in the Nordic countries.

This year's theme for the award was "Mobility and wireless access to the Internet - technologies, new services and applications". Candidates from Sweden, Finland and Denmark covering various aspects of this theme have been nominated.

Professor Jensen founded and heads a research group at the University of Aalborg in the field of databases with special focus on representation of moveable objects. This group has established itself as one of the leaders in this field internationally, and in recent years the emphasis has been on problems connected to mobile Internet services. Mobile Internet services represent a growth field that will offer a plethora of new areas of application for users, but will also make heavy demands for solutions that will allow these services to function on different radio systems and with a multitude of new actors. The Jury has found that Professor Jensen and his group have made and will continue to make important contributions to developments in this field. Confirmation of this can be found in the fact that Professor Jensen cooperates extensively with the industry, and in particular has been involved as a consultant and member of the board of newly established companies.

Professor Jensen has a Ph.D. and Dr. Techn. degree. In addition to his position as a Professor at the University of Aalborg, he holds an Honorary Professorship at the University of Cardiff, is a Visiting Professor at the University of Arizona, and is also an Associate Professor at Agder Regional College in Norway. His list of publications numbers more than 100 titles and he has been an editor and consultant for leading international trade magazines and conferences.
This year's winner scores high on the criteria that have been set for the award. He has developed expertise that is highly relevant for the theme for this year's award, has documented academic quality of the highest order, is busy promoting industrial development, and has built a comprehensive network for the publication of findings. The Jury also finds that Professor Jensen is engaged in a field that will greatly impact the development of mobile services in the future.
