Android is hot in Hungary
Article:
Android hits the spot in Hungary this holiday season. Telenor Hungary launched a large-scale commercial campaign to promote the increasingly popular Google operating system, resulting in a sharp increase in Android smartphone sales.
Telenor Hungary smartphone sales skyrocketed in December 2010, helping the company exceed its sales targets by 25 percent. Android served as one the main drivers of this escalation in overall smartphone sales, as the Google operating system was on the holiday wish lists of 14 percent of all Telenor Hungary customers in December.
Android takes on the world
As of Q3 2010, Android held a 23 percent market share, with 4.3 million Android-based units shipped in Western Europe. In Western Europe, Samsung Galaxy S was the most popular handset in Q3 2010, according to market intelligence, conducted by IDC. Telenor Hungary customers have preferences similar to Western European trends. The top three phones among Telenor Hungary customers this year were Samsung Galaxy S, Samsung Galaxy 3 and SonyEricsson Xperia X8. The daily sales of Samsung Galaxy S and HTC Desire handsets saw a threefold and fivefold increase, respectively, compared to previous months.
“We see a very strong growth for Android devices in all our markets in Europe and Asia, for example Android has outperformed all other Operating Systems two quarters in a row in our Nordic region where 27% of all devices sold in Q4 were Android based smart phones. We are seeing similar trends in Asia where Android is by far the fastest growing eco-system. We are working closely with Telenor Hungary and our Global partners on the Device side to bring new devices and concepts to market in order to have superior and differentiated customer experience in all of our markets,” said Irfan Khan, Vice President and Head of Devices, Telenor Corporate Development.

Realizing the potential of Android, Telenor Hungary launched a large-scale commercial and social media campaign, as well as an education programme in early December 2010, in order to demonstrate how smartphones can make the life easier. The concept was geared around giving people Android handsets to help them realize its full potential.
“We went a bit bold and personal with this creative campaign, but still kept the Telenor brand promise of honesty. It was a great experience to work with such a new and growing brand as Android,” said András Kallós, Director, Marketing Communications.
Continued focus on Android to drive data traffic
Telenor Hungary will continue to focus on Android in 2011, aiming to position Telenor as the top Android operator through its diverse selection of Android smartphones, and its focus on educating customers and employees to serve as Android ambassadors.
As Android is becoming one of the preferred operating systems among customers, Telenor Hungary expects that the interest will continue to grow, thus generating further data traffic for the company. Telenor Hungary is currently in the process of upgrading its network to 4G capabilities, meaning that both small screen and large screen Internet are key focus areas for Telenor Hungary.
