Telenor Group in Asia
The Telenor Group entered the Asian region in 1996 through the successful investment in Grameenphone in Bangladesh.
Since then, the Asian markets have been a cornerstone of the development of the Telenor Group, providing growth opportunities in some of the most populated and fastest growing markets in the world.
High growth and solid financial performance
The mobile operations in Asia contribute significantly to the revenues and EBITDA of the Telenor Group. In the first quarter of 2009, the region generated 30 per cent of the revenues and 28 per cent of the Group EBITDA. At the end of the first quarter of 2009, Telenor had ina total 67 million mobile subscriptions in the region.


State-of-the-art mobile services
The Telenor Group is a driving force in the network development and growth of the mobile sector in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Thailand and Malaysia. Over the past decade, the Telenor Group has received a multitude of awards for its innovation and services. Examples include the mobile trading place CellBazaar in Bangladesh, the first mobile banking services in Thailand, ATM SIM, and the money transfer service DiGiREMIT in Malaysia. In addition, the Telenor Group has significantly increased the network capacity and extended the coverage to new and often remote areas, connecting millions of previously unconnected people.

The Asian mobile markets have been growing rapidly in the past decade. The Telenor Group is continuosly innovating and introducing new services to drive future growth in the Asian region. The Telenor Group operates mobile networks in Pakistan, Malaysia, Thailand and Bangladesh and holds a 3G license in Malaysia. With the acquisition of Unitech Wireless in India, the Telenor Group has entered one of the largest and fastest growing mobile markets in the world.
Trading of Grameenphone shares started
Grameenphone started trading its shares on the stock exchanges in Dhaka and Chittagong on 16 November 2009.
