Pakistan's first CR report

(24 October, 2007) Telenor Pakistan supports a range of social activities. Here are the highlights from their first Corporate Responsibility Report.

Tele Kissan: Providing vital information for farmers
The farming community needs speedy access to information that has a impact to their productivity. By dialling 700 from their Telenor connection farmers get:

  • weather forecasts
  • commodity / product prices
  • agricultural remedies
  • news and updates

Village conversion program: Shops on tour
Sometimes the biggest problems for the rural populations is not coverage but availability. Telenor Pakistan solves this by sending vans with products and staff to the most remote areas of the country. This way anyone can register and buy products, no matter how far they live from the nearest Telenor shop.

Rabta Centers: Communication facilities for everybody These community information centres offer all modern communication facilities. Each centre is equipped with twoPCs with Edge data card to connect to Internet, a printer, scanner, webcam and a handset with Telenor Pakistan connection.

Telecom Futures: Developing local technology expertise
The telecommunications sector brings employment opportunities to Pakistan, but the potential employees need to have the right quality of training. Telenor Pakistan collaborates with Nokia, Siemens and TEVTA (Technical Education & Vocational Training Authority) to:

  • Create a new curriculum in line with industry expectations
  • Provide technical training to teachers twice a year
  • Give scholarships to help applicants with the tuition fee
  • Reward successful teachers
  • Provide the school with the latest telecom equipment
  • Give the students graduating from Telecom Futures internship opportunities

Apna PCO: Share a mobile phone
A majority of the rural populations cannot afford to own phones. Apna PCO is a business-in-a-box solution for entrepreneurs. The package includes a robust phone, training and sufficient equipment for the entrepreneur to offer phone call services for the village. As the villages benefit from this supervised public payphone, this also is a business opportunity for local entrepreneurs.
