Since 2005, Telenor has been disclosing its carbon emissions through CDP and in 2011 we are for the first time ranked as one of the top 10 telecom companies (being # 8) of the Global top 500 companies. Telenor is also ranked in the top of the telecommunications sector in the Nordic region.
“We have gained extensive experience in reducing the environmental impact of our global operations and provide solutions to customers to reduce their CO2 emissions and energy costs”, says Jan Kristensen, Director Climate Change, Telenor Group.
Efficiency in the networks
Telenor Group’s key climate ambition is to improve its operational efficiency in the networks, which represent approximately 85 % of the total CO2 emissions.
“In order to measure and disclose how these improvements impact both financial performance and our carbon footprint, it has been essential for Telenor Group to have a robust non-financial reporting system where energy consumption, CO2 emissions, and trends in energy usage can be accurately measured for both the Group as a whole and individual business units”, says Jan Kristensen.
Climate change related opportunities and risks
The CDP states in their Global 500 Report 2011 that the telecom sector still has new market opportunities that allow customers to save energy and replace hardware with software services – and that new regulation aimed at stimulating emissions reduction may increase demand for such services. The CDP report also highlights the risk of damage to service-availability due to severe weather, such as network disruption as well as potential increases in the cost of energy and fuel as a result of climate regulations.
The CDP states in their Nordic Report 2011 that the telecom sector reports business opportunities like increased demand for products that help others to save energy and reduce emissions, including smart metering and monitoring.
The Carbon Disclosure Project
The Carbon Disclosure Project is an independent not-for-profit organization holding the largest database of primary corporate climate change information in the world. Over 3,000 organizations in some 60 countries around the world now measure and disclose their greenhouse gas emissions, water management and climate change strategies through CDP, in order that they can set reduction targets and make performance improvements.
