Deep Green – Addressing Climate Change
Country: Malaysia
Topic: Environment and Climate
Last updated:
Launched in 2008 by DiGi, the Telenor mobile operator in Malaysia, Deep Green is a programme that addresses climate change. The overall aim is to reduce CO2 emissions by nearly 50 per cent over a period of 3 to 4 years.
DiGi aims to reduce the company’s carbon footprint by close to 50 per cent of its 2011 projected baseline of 130,000 tonnes of CO2 within 3-4 years – a challenging ambition by any standards and particularly for any company in the ICT industry.
Reducing our own climate impact
Adopting a two-pronged approach, DiGi aims to achieve its ambitious goal by addressing its internal CO2 emissions in the areas of:
- Mobile & IT networks
- Building & transport management
- Employee attitudes
DiGi is also implementing innovative solutions to reduce the combined climate impact of the company and its external stakeholders through marketing, products and community programmes.
Saving the mangrove forests
Malaysia has been identified as one of the five countries in the world to have lost the most mangrove forests since 1990 due to land clearing. Working with the Malaysian Nature Society, DiGi engages students, businesses and authorities in the Kuala Selangor region to save these highly CO2-absorbing plants. Activities include replanting trees, monitoring the soil and water quality and reporting any changes in the biodiversity indicators of the wildlife and flora population.

Deep Green NOW! – local engagement
The mangrove project is part of DiGi’s community engagement programme, Deep Green NOW! The idea is to bring awareness and understanding of climate change and local environmental issues to communities across Malaysia. Through a mutual learning process with the local communities and neighbouring schoolchildren, we aim to address the many real risks our environment faces from climate change, and how we can develop innovative solutions and sustainable lifestyle options to minimise our combined impact on climate change.
Feel the heat, Time to Change
An internal campaign was launched on 30 June 2008 to create greater awareness about DiGi’s plans to go Deep Green and about Climate Change. Entitled “Feel the Heat, Time to Change”, the three-week campaign saw an intensive awareness campaign to emphasise the point that every individual can make a difference in the global fight against climate change. Employees will work continuously to maintain this level of awareness and to educate people about climate change and about how their contributions can make a positive difference personally and professionally.
Going green – not just another business expense
According to the report on the environmental impact of the ICT industry “Smart 2020: Enabling the low carbon economy in the information age,” the ICT industry is set to surpass the aviation industry as a major carbon emitter by 2012. This must be counteracted.
“We know that by setting a target of a 50 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions we are setting ourselves a great challenge, but we want to make a real difference on this critical issue. The first step is to get our stakeholders along the value chain to gradually change their attitudes towards climate change and to realise that going ‘green’ can be mutually beneficial for everyone, and not just another business expense,” said CEO of DiGi, Johan Dennlind.
