Health, Safety, Security and Environment in the Telenor Group
As an international company with a diversified workforce, Telenor Group places great emphasis on Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE). We have adopted a systematic approach to the way we manage this internally in Telenor and towards our contractors, vendors and suppliers.
Overall HSSE Ambitions
By continuing our Group wide crisis management work, best practice sharing, and training and development work, our overall ambition is becoming the industry leader in Occupational Health, Safety, and Security through
- Demonstrating excellent working conditions and environmental management.
- Requiring HSSE business conduct from suppliers.
- HSSE focus and efforts in accordance with international references.
- Making a difference in the local market and building a competitive edge.
Focus areas
Telenor has chosen to apply a holistic view on the HSSE work, integrating Occupational Health, Safety, and Security (OHS&S) and Environmental issues. We have one common systematic approachboth internally in the Group as well as for our contractors, vendors and suppliers. Key focus areas for the HSSE work are:
- Improved HSSE performance through long-term systematic work and continuous improvement.
- Implementation of an integrated HSSE Management System.
- Establishment of a Group HSSE culture.
- Persistent focus on Supply Chain Sustainability.
- Selected Group Environmental Programmes.
HSSE performance and preventive work
To monitor HSSE performance and progress, and to facilitate benchmarking, a comprehensive internal HSSE reporting system is established. Indicators are generally monitored on a monthly basis.

In order to support improved HSSE performance over time, Telenor carries out required training and awareness programmes on HSSE for its employees and in-house contractors at local level. In addition to local training and awareness, Telenor has developed a global HSSE vLearning programme called ‘People First’, in support of these three main goals:

HSSE Management System
Telenor has decided to implement an HSSE Management System across the Group, in accordance with ISO 14001 for Environment and OHSAS 18001 for Occupational Health Safety & Security, scoping the internal operations in the Telenor Group. The system has been successfully implemented in all of the Telenor Business Units. The HSSE Management System ensures a structured way of assessing and mitigating HSSE risk within Telenor’s Business Units, with clear management involvement and direction.
Among Telenor Groups third party certifications is also Uninor’s SA 8000 certification; official from April 2013. This demonstrates our approaches to human rights in the workplace and providing safe and ethical work practices as well as supporting compliance with social accountability standards across our supply chain. This is a strong testimony of Telenor’s commitment towards Social Accountability and Corporate Responsibility.
