The compilation and reporting of environmental data from some countries adds an element of uncertainty with respect to the basis of the figures. Telenor is working actively to clarify this situation and to improve the quality of the reporting in all countries.
Telenor follows the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG) when reporting on our environmental performance. The GHG is an international standard established by World Resources Initiative (WRI) and World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). It is based on ten years of collaborative effort between corporations, governments and environmental organisations. The ISO 14064-1:2006 standard for quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions was also founded on GHG. We therefore feel that GHG is a reliable and thorough standard that provides a realistic view on the direct and indirect emissions of Telenor.
The GHG divides emissions into three scopes in order to better highlight the sources.
| Scope 1: Direct GHG emissions (CO2 - tonnes) |
| This scope focuses on emissions from sources owned or directly controlled by Telenor. |
| Our emissions are caused by: |
Values 2007 (CO2 - tonnes): |
| Own and employees car fleet in duty |
35 682 |
| Gas heating purposes |

| Oil - heating purposes |

| Own electricity production with gas or diesel |

| Scope 2: Electricity indirect GHG emissions (CO2 - tonnes) |
| This scope focuses on emissions from energy procurement. |
| Our emissions are caused by: |
Values 2007 (CO2 - tonnes): |
| Generation of purchased electricity |
466 544 |
| Generation of purchased district heating and cooling |

| Scope 3: Other indirect GHG emissions (CO2 - tonnes) |
| Indirect emissions related to the activities of Telenor, but not controlled by Telenor. This scope encompasses so far only business flights. Telenor will however work to include more elements in the future, especially related to employees commuting to work and emissions caused by subcontractors - like cargo operators. |

Telenor launched an ambitious climate programme in 2007. As a result, this year’s green audit now includes elements that were not part of our former audit, and thus the figures are not directly comparable. Key figures for previous years (pdf)
Paper
Consumption of paper for office use was 104 million A-4 sheets in 2007. This equals 3000 sheets per man-year, a considerable amount that we will seek to reduce going
forward.
Water
Our consumption of water was 2.4 million m3 in 2007. 67 m3 per man-year.
Waste
Figures on waste generation and recycling will be published when we have collected data from all our companies.
In several countries where we operate there seems to be a general lack of focus on waste generation. However, we intend to raise the awareness and understanding of waste management and recycling in all of our operating companies in the coming year.
