Jan Groth was born in Norway in 1938, but has spent much of his life abroad. He is best known for his Gobelins, but also draws and sculpts. He studied painting in Denmark and took an interest in Gobelin weaving in Holland. He has collaborated with his former wife Benedikte Groth on all his Gobelins. Groth lived for many years in New York and has made an international career, with exhibitions in prominent museums and galleries in New York and Japan, among other places, and a large retrospective exhibition in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Oslo 1985. His main work is considered to be the embroidered curtain at Det Norske Teater in Oslo dated 1985.
