Asta Nørregaard (1853-1933) was a very popular portrait painter. Nørregaard was trained in Germany. She was considered as an extremely promising painter within the leading artistic style of the time, realism, but also as a portrait painter with a considerable ability for accurate portrayal of her subjects’ characteristics. In Norway she chose not to become part of the radical artistic movement which was prominent in the 1880s, but specialised instead in portraits. She painted more than 300 portraits of leading men within civic life and of women from the upper middle classes.
