Erik Werenskiold (1855-1938) was recognised and loved in Norway for his illustrations of Norwegian folk tales and Snorre's saga of the Norse Kings. He trained in Germany, like many other Norwegian artists around 1880. When he returned to Norway he became a key figure in promoting realism in visual art and the professionalisation of the country's artistic life. He was one of the instigators of the "autumn exhibition", which remains one of the most important exhibitions for Norwegian artists even today.
