Franz West was born in 1946 in Austria, where he lives and works. West graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. He has exhibited internationally for more than three decades in galleries and museums and at major festivals. West is interested in communication, and the fact that galleries and museums give little opportunity to relate to or engage with works of art, beyond the purely visual experience. The audience’s wish to engage with art to a larger degree is a theme in West’s sculptural work. He invites his audience to climb, sit and use his sculptures as they wish.
