Ukraine
Kyivstar is the largest mobile operator in Ukraine, currently serving more than 23 million customers. The growth of the Ukrainian mobile sector has been tremendous: from 2004 to 2006 the number of Ukrainians with mobile phones tripled - along with the number of Kyivstar subscribers - and mobile penetration is now well above 100 per cent. As the majority owner of Kyivstar (56.5 per cent), Telenor is one of the biggest Western investors in Ukraine and the only Western European telecom operator with long-term ambitions in the country.
The headquarters of Kyivstar are located in Kyiev.
Licences and network
Kyivstar's wireless network operates using the GSM standard and provides coverage accessible to approximately 99 per cent of the Ukrainian population. Kyivstar's network is fully GPRS upgraded. Kyivstar launched EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution) in 2005, which at the end of 2006, was operational in all major cities in Ukraine. In addition, Kyivstar continued to roll out its own fibre backbone network.
Services and innovation
Kyivstar provides GPRS services all over its coverage territory in Ukraine as well as international GPRS-roaming in 118 countries. In addition to voice telephony, Kyivstar provides a full range of telecommunications products and services, including mobile Internet. Kyivstar distributes its products and services through both indirect sales channels (dealers, retailers, wholesalers) and direct sales channels (telemarketing and direct contact).
Developing mobile communication services has huge socio-economic benefits: according to a study by financial advisory firm Deloitte in 2007, contributions by the mobile industry to the Ukrainian national economy represent 5.9 per cent of its total Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The mobile industry is also a significant source of employment in Ukraine, providing full-time employment, directly and indirectly, to almost 120,000 Ukrainians in 2007.
