Thailand
dtac is the second largest mobile operator in Thailand, with a market share of 32 per cent. Dtac has been a driving force in the network expansion and growth of the mobile sector of Thailand. The share of people with mobile phones increased from 35 per cent in 2003 to 82 per cent in 2007 and the number of dtac subscribers grew from 6.6 to 15.8 million.
The mobile industry plays a key role in the economic development of Thailand. It contributed THB 393 billion to the economy in 2007, according to a study Deloitte carried out for Telenor. This represents almost five per cent of the total GDP. The sector employed almost 150,000 Thai full time employees in 2007.
Telenor entered the Thai market in 2000, and its economic exposure in dtac is 65.5 per cent.
The headquarters of dtac are located in Bangkok.
Network and licences
dtac currently has a GSM 1800 and an AMPS 800 licence. Dtac is now upgrading its 800 MHz network with High-Speed Packet Access (HDSP), or 3G services. The network is expanding. In 2007 alone, dtac put up close to 1000 new base stations, mostly located outside city areas where coverage was previously limited. Dtac operates under a Build-Transfer-Operate concession granted by the CAT Telecom PLC of Thailand.
Services and innovation
dtac offers mobile voice, roaming and value-added services to its customers through contract and prepaid tariff plans. Dtac also offers mobile Internet services. Some of the dtac services are:
- ATM SIM. dtac customers can check their balance, transfer money, make payments and perform virtually every banking operation there is, except cash withdrawal.
- Pop Push-Mail. dtac has more than 100,000 users on its push-mail service for Yahoo, Hotmail and Gmail users.
dtac won the Best Mobile Operator of Thailand award for three consecutive years (2005-2007) from Asian Mobile News Awards.
