Sweden

Telenor has provided telecommunication services to the Swedish market since 2001. Telenor is the third largest mobile operator in Sweden, with a market share of 18 per cent and approximately 1.9 million customers. In recent years, Telenor has been developing its broadband services through its subsidiary company Bredbandsbolaget. Telenor also owns Swedish residential voice and broadband provider Glocalnet, and the two broadband companies have a combined subscriber base of 651 000. Through Canal Digital, Telenor also has a dominant position in the digital television market. 

Licences and network
Telenor Sweden currently holds four licences: a GSM 900, a GSM 1800, a UMTS licence as well as a new 2.6 GHz licence acquired in May 2008. The terms of the UMTS licence required Telenor Sweden to provide network coverage for 97 per cent of the population, approximately 8.9 million people, by 1 June 2007. This requirement was met by the specified date.

Services and innovation
Telenor Sweden provides several voice and data services to both business and consumer customers, covered through a range of wireless, fixed and broadband technologies, for instance:

  • Safety alarm services allowing emergency personnel to be notified directly on their mobile phones.
  • A music station, where users can listen to up to 1.6 million songs for a fixed monthly fee.
  • Wireless machine to machine communication services (Telenor is the leading provider).

Bredbandsbolaget
Bredbandsbolaget offers high speed broadband services, and is one of the pioneers of broadband technology in the Swedish market. Founded in 1998, the company was the first to offer IP telephony and digital TV through broadband. With more than 460 000 households connected to the company’s network, Bredbandsbolaget is Sweden’s second largest broadband provider with a market share of 25 per cent. In the market for IP telephony, Bredbandsbolaget is the leading provider with approximately 200 000 customers. Bredbandsbolaget was acquired by Telenor in 2005.

Glocalnet
Glocalnet was founded in 1997 and acquired by Telenor in 2006. The company has 250 000 fixed telephony customers and 180 000 broadband customers. It employs 80 people and is headquartered in Stockholm.

Canal Digital
Canal Digital Sweden provides television and broadband services to approximately 870 000 million Swedish households. The head office is located in Stockholm and the company has 97 employees.

Canal Digital is the leading television distributor in the Nordic market, serving more than 3 million Nordic households. The company broadcasts on all platforms: satellite, cable, broadband and digital terrestrial television. It is a holding company, fully owned by Telenor since 2001.
