Denmark
Telenor operations in Denmark include Sonofon, a fully owned subsidiary and the second largest mobile operator in the country. Sonofon has a market share of 27 per cent and serves 1.7 million customers. Telenor Nordic also owns the mobile providers CBB and Tele2 Danmark, broadband company Cybercity and digital television provider Canal Digital. With more than 260 000 broadband customers and 900 000 television subscribers, Telenor is one of the leading players in these markets.
Licences and network
Sonofon currently holds four licences: a GSM 900 licence, two GSM 1800 licences and a UMTS licence acquired in 2005. UMTS is one of the third generation (3G) cell phone technologies, and the 3G network is now rolled out across the country.
Services and innovation
Sonofon offers several private and corporate services, prepaid and contract mobile telephony. The company is constantly developing its network and services to improve customer satisfaction, for instance by:
- Streaming television broadcasts from leading TV channels directly to user’s mobile phones.
- Providing 3G and Turbo 3G connectivity, supplemented with EDGE, to 80 per cent of the Danish population in 2008. Continued roll-out to 99 per cent of Denmark is expected in 2010.
- Providing child safety solutions, which enable parents to control their children’s mobile phone use.
Cybercity
Cybercity provides private and business customers with the latest in broadband technology and IP telephony. The company was established in 1995 and initially offered internet connection to Danish residents close to Copenhagen. A focus on growth and more than DKK 800 million in investments led to a rapid expansion of both the network and customer base to cover the whole country. The company was acquired by Telenor in 2005. Cybercity is headquartered in Copenhagen and has 400 employees.

Canal Digital
In Denmark, Canal Digital provides over 900 000 households with television, IP telephony and internet services. Even though the Danish television market is mature and subject to fierce competition, Canal Digital Denmark increased both its top and bottom line in 2007. Turnover increased by 15 per cent and totalled DKK 958 million, largely due to higher subscription levels.
Canal Digital broadcasts on all platforms: satellite, cable, broadband and digital terrestrial television. It is a holding company, fully owned by Telenor since 2001.
